Expert meniscal surgery in Bristol including meniscus repair and preservation techniques. Our knee surgeons prioritise saving the meniscus wherever possible.
The menisci are two C-shaped pieces of cartilage in the knee that act as shock absorbers between the thigh bone (femur) and shin bone (tibia). Meniscal tears are one of the most common knee injuries, occurring during sports, twisting injuries, or as part of age-related wear and tear.
Meniscus surgery is performed arthroscopically (keyhole surgery) and aims to either repair the torn meniscus or, where repair is not possible, remove only the damaged portion while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible.
Your surgeon will examine your knee and perform specific clinical tests for meniscal injury. An MRI scan provides detailed images of the menisci and is used to confirm the diagnosis and plan treatment.
Many meniscal tears, particularly degenerative tears in older patients, can be managed successfully without surgery. Treatment may include rest, anti-inflammatory medication, and a structured physiotherapy programme to strengthen the muscles around the knee.
Where the tear pattern and location allow, meniscal repair is the preferred surgical option — particularly in younger patients. Repair preserves the meniscus and its important shock-absorbing function, reducing the long-term risk of arthritis.
When repair is not feasible, the torn portion of the meniscus is carefully trimmed away while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. This is a quicker procedure with a faster recovery than repair.
Our specialist knee surgeons in Bristol prioritise meniscal preservation wherever possible. They have advanced training in meniscal repair techniques and use the latest arthroscopic technology.
All procedures are performed as day-case surgery at Bristol’s leading private hospitals.
